the most beautiful lyrics: forgiveness

Some of the most beautiful song lyrics I’ve heard in my life come from the Maine-born, Boston-bred, Austin-livin’ Americana soulstress Patty Griffin. I was first given Living With Ghosts, her debut album (actually her demo which was released after an attempt at producing her record ended in an over-produced downer for all involved) in 1999. It was on Ghosts that I heard the guitar-thumping folk-anthem Forgiveness. It remains one of the most beautiful songs I know and starts out:

“we are swimming with the snakes at the bottom of the well
so silent and peaceful in the darkness where we fell
but we are not snakes and what’s more we never will be
if we stay swimming here forever we will never be free”
